Brendan Rodgers: We’re disappointed with the result

At no stage in his Liverpool tenure has Rodgers enjoyed more success than when his team were terrorising opposition with a three-pronged attack that threatened to overrun opponents from the moment they started.

Having needed penalties to overcome Carlisle United in the League Cup last week, Liverpool have now won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, and Sion defender Ziegler confirmed his side were keen to exploit the home side’s lack of confidence.

Rodgers is likely to shuffle his pack again for the weekend visit to Goodison Park, with Daniel Sturridge, James Milner and Lucas Leiva all rested for tonight’s game.

FC SION: Vanins, Zverotic, Lacroix, Ziegler, Pa Modou, Kouassi, Salatic, Fernandes, Assifuah (Ndoye 86), Konate (Mujangi Bia 90), Alves Garcia. However, his command of the area leaves a lot to be desired with, as Reds defence constantly looks for a leader in the back.

He has made his comeback in Liverpool’s last two matches, showing a familiar sharpness in scoring twice in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa. At left back, Dejan Lovren, while a quality player in general has committed a few shocking errors.

Kolo Toure then tried an acrobatic effort with an overhead kick which, despite sailing high into the Anfield sky, dropped onto the crossbar.

“It’s a rebuilding job again and we will take it forward hopefully”. He was caught slightly in the build up to Sion’s goal.

“Maybe that little bit of lack of experience at times has not seen us hang onto the lead”.

His explosive return is likely to put him in contention for Roy Hodgson’s squad selection, which will be confirmed on Thursday afternoon ahead of fixtures at home to Estonia and away against Lithuania.

Rodgers’ side took an early lead through Adam Lallana, but they were pegged back by Ebenezer Assifuah’s first-half equaliser.

Ings has been one of the shining lights in the season so far.

Clyne was hooked at the break, with Alberto Moreno replacing him for the second half. However, he was not able to have much of an impact on the game as he hardly got the possession of the ball.

Benteke’s injury has also allowed Danny Ings to stake his claim for a place in the starting line-up.
