Potsdam Police shoot and kill Clarkson University student stabbing fellow

Two Clarkson University students are dead after a stabbing at an off-campus apartment. One of the victims was shot and killed by police. 


According to Potsdam Police, units arrived to the apartment in the Swan Landing Apartment complex in the Village of Potsdam around 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

When they arrived, they found a male stabbing a female and himself. 

Officers ordered the male to drop the knife and when he failed to obey, one of the officers fired a shot, hitting and killing him. 

Police have identified two Chinese graduate students who died after a domestic dispute at Clarkson University in upstate New York.

Police said both the victim and the assailant were students at Clarkson University.

They say both were pursuing doctorates at Clarkson University.

A body was in view on the porch of one of the townhouses in the development north of Maple Street along the Raquette River shortly before 4 p.m.

The female victim was transported to Canton – Potsdam Hospital, where she was was pronounced dead. 

Police say Officer Matt Seymour shot Chinese after he refused several requests to drop the knife. The man failed to comply with an order to drop the knife and was shot and killed, police said.

A Clarkson student who lives near-by, Chaun Tang, said he heard arguing and gunshots.

Troopers are investigating the incident with the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office and in cooperation with Potsdam police.

“We were in contact with law enforcement, who told us that the incident did not pose a threat to the campus”, the statement said.
