Turnbull said he asked Australia’s most senior legal officer to provide advice on Dutton’s eligibility. “In the situation that the Government’s in now, and destined to lose the next election to Labor, astoundingly, maybe Tony Abbott would’ve been the alternative to take on this position”.

Scott Morrison has invited US President Donald Trump to Australia during a “very warm” phone call the day after becoming Australia’s prime minister. “If people are determined to wreck, they will continue to do so”. “I look forward to building a really strong relationship with him”, Ardern said. “It is not a secret”.

Morrison became Australia’s 30th prime minister after the vote ended the internecine battle that has scarred the conservative government ahead of an election due by May 2019.

When he returned to Australia he became director of the NSW Liberal Party in 2000 before taking a job running Tourism Australia in 2004 where he was involved in the controversial “Where the bloody hell are you?” campaign. One prime minister, Harold Holt, met his end while body surfing.

The current Treasurer, Scott Morrison was chosen in a ballot of his party’s lawmakers on Friday, and the outgoing Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he was quitting government now that his replacement had been chosen.

When the Abbott government was elected in 2013 Mr Morrison launched Operation Sovereign Borders, the tough, military-led strategy to stop unauthorised boats departing for Australia, a policy which ultimately proved successful.

Morrison was the “candidate best able to gather votes from across the ideological divide”, according to The Guardian, which notes that Morrison “was also expected to win support from moderates who once would have viewed him with suspicion”.

Liberal deputy and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will throw her hat into the leadership ring.

The Senate and the lower house have both adjourned and some Liberal members left Parliament House before Malcolm Turnbull departed about 9.30pm.

Once the result is known, they will be announced to media after the meeting.

We’ll bring you updates as they come to hand. Today he called on the Liberals to do the same in the name of stability for the country.

The internal bickering infuriated many inside the Liberal party and renewed public disgust towards the political class.

Friday’s vote was the second challenge this week to the leadership of Turnbull, who himself assumed office by leading a party revolt in 2015.

Supporters of contender Peter Dutton claim he has now secured the signatures needed to force the leadership spill.

Mr Morrison is being sworn in by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove this afternoon, having first knocked out Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in a three-way contest and then defeated ex-Immigration minister Peter Dutton 45-40.

“I will invite a spill motion to be moved”.
