Matthews was in critical condition at ETMC in Tyler, according to the Alto High School principal. Progress sports correspondent Doc Smith relayed Matthews, who was a junior, was on the kickoff-return team as the final seconds ticked down before halftime.

Alto high school has an enrollment of nearly 200 students.
All of the teens except Williams died after being injured on the field.
Last season, five high school players died of causes directly related to football, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina.
