Alabama’s turnover woes return in 43-37 loss to Ole MIss

Think back to the 2009-2012 seasons when Alabama would simply show up, play virtually mistake-free football, and wait for the other team to kill itself with inevitable blunders. Forget the fact that the ‘Canes were able to win in that first extra session; the meltdown at the end of the game was hauntingly reminiscent of the late-game meltdowns last season that put Golden on the hot seat in the first place. Jake Coker throws a desperation pass while getting hit, it gets intercepted. Barrett threw a touchdown pass and an interception.

Fast forward to this implosion, this meltdown in a big game that is becoming all too familiar.

The Tide threw 58 passes and only netted 288 yards.

He also had five catches for 39 yards.

It doesn’t appear that Cardale Jones is very happy with what was, at least for the moment, a one-game demotion as Ohio State’s starting quarterback.

Boykin, who finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting past year , completed 21 of 30 passes. Henry had some success, gaining 54 yards on 13 carries through two quarters, but Ole Miss did a good job of getting to him before he gained a head of steam. Kick coverage was outstanding again outside of a lone return that made it out to about the 40. And while other teams will sink in rankings due to disappointing, yet winning, performances today, USC is expected to sink seven or more spots in the new AP Top 25 College football rankings after tonight’s big upset. His first carry of the game set the tone as he raced 71 yards for a touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage.

A field goal by Tide kicker Adam Griffith tied the score at 3 early in the second quarter. The first by any SEC team ever.

Alabama running back Derrick Henry rushed 23 times for 127 yards and a touchdown. Alabama is averaging over 200 yards rushing per game. Four times it decided the national championship between 1983 and 2001. The Badgers beat Troy 28-3.

Mississippi has been setting records behind transfer quarterback Chad Kelly. Now, Coker figures to continue getting the majority of snaps, especially if he can prove himself against a staunch Ole Miss defense.

Mississippi’s Chad Kelly dives in for a touchdown against Alabama in the first half.

Kelly caught fire and the Tide surrendered 305 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air in the second half.

No. 13 LSU 45, No. 18 Auburn 21: Leonard Fournette ran for a career-high 228 yards and three touchdowns, and LSU steamrolled Auburn. And for all the talk about turnovers and short fields, Ole Miss still averaged 6.7 yards per play. Quarterback Brandon Harris added 66 yards and two touchdowns.

South Carolina (1-2, 0-2) has lost its first two conference games for the first time since 2008. Actually, at least 10 more players were tossed for the penalty, with No. 24 Wisconsin and Miami each losing two defenders. Core, a senior, led the team in receiving with 123 yards.

Tulsa and Oklahoma combined for 1,376 yards. The score stood at 30-10 in favor of Ole Miss at the 3:57 mark in the third quarter.

Coker opened the drive with a run for a first down, but ended it with his second interception of the game.

Rushing defense: B – This one’s kind of by default.

The Tide opted for a conventional kickoff after that touchdown. Chief Brown also has scored on an interception return.

Look, the Rebels scored those points not just because of the turnovers but because they have two things Alabama lacks: A field goal kicker and a good quarterback. UConn is 2-1. The Cardinal earned a much-needed victory over Central Florida last week after dropping its season opener at Northwestern.
