Day takes number one spot from McIlroy

Jason Day claimed his seventh USPGA Tour victory on Sunday to take over the world number one ranking, becoming the third player in as many weeks to capture golf’s coveted top spot.


“It’s been very, very hard for me to try and downplay getting to number one because I’ve really wanted to reach this goal for a very long time now”, Day said after his six-shot victory.

Lovemark and Marino were already assured of a return to the PGA Tour as a result of their exploits during the Web Tour regular season but both Reavie and Grillo are also on their way to the big stage next year.


The former BYU golfer and current Fruit Heights resident ended up as the first player on the cut line for next week’s Tour Championships as he finished in 31st place in the FedEx standings after the BMW Championship near Chicago over the weekend. World number one Rory McIlroy birdied three of the last four holes for a four-under 67 and is in sole possession of fourth seven shots back of Day. Jordan Spieth is now in second with 4392 points.
