How to get help for someone who might be suicidal
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that from 1999 to 2016 the suicide rate in the United States rose 28 percent – and said that in 2016 almost 45,000 people killed themselves across our nation.

Nevada, whose suicide rate decreased by 1 percent during the 17-year period, was the only state to report a decline.
“Our data show that the problem is getting worse”, Schuchat said.
The national rate increased as well, jumping 25 percent over the same time frame.
The authors suggested that to curb this trend, health officials must shift their focus from exclusively identifying people who are already suicidal and stopping further attempts, to raising awareness of the risk factors among the general population. “But we know it’s multiple factors, and the data just don’t tell us specifically which one”.
Despite the increase, MA still has one of the nation’s lowest per capita suicide rates, ranking 48th.
Like Spade, celebrity chef and author Bourdain died by hanging, Page Six reported.
Adults ages 45 to 64 had the largest increase in the suicide rate, from 13.2 suicides per 100,000 people in 1999 to 19.2 suicides per 100,000 in 2016.
But the report found that many people who committed suicide had not been diagnosed with a mental illness.
Patrick Smith, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Toronto, said he isn’t aware of a similar increase among that age group in Canada. However, 60 percent of individuals with mental illnesses do not receive treatment, due to stigma, lack of health insurance, lack of qualified providers and other factors.
The state with the lowest rise in its suicide rate was DE (5.9 percent).
“Veterans made up about 18 percent of adult suicides but represent about 8.5 percent of the U.S. adult population”, Schuchat said, noting that not all veterans who died by suicide were recent veterans. “Anybody who only knows him from TV will really get a sense of him by reading his books”, Zien said.
“Economic conditions or livelihood opportunities in decline could lead people to positions where they’re at risk”.
If ever a week delivered a wakeup call about the frequency of suicide, and how vulnerable so many of us are, this was it.
Recent government reports have highlighted rising rates of suicide among women. According to the CDC report, western states are hit the hardest, except California.
She said most people experiencing suicidal thoughts are typically relieved to have a chance to talk and get connected with services for help.
Increasing the use of alcohol or other drugs.
The causes behind the rises in suicides and major depression reman uncertain.
Health professionals didn’t offer a reason for the increase but said suicides rarely result from a single factor. “Instead, these folks were suffering from other issues, such as relationship problems, substance misuse, physical health problems, job or financial problems, and recent crises or things that were coming up in their lives that they were anticipating”, says Stone.
Guns are the most common method used for suicides in the USA, accounting for about half of such deaths in 2016, followed by hanging and then poisoning (including through the use of opioids). Particularly among younger people, Dr. Phillips said, “We are seeing somewhat more tolerant attitudes toward suicide”. “Anytime we want to resolve something that involves firearms, we’ve need to talk about firearms explicitly”, he says.

“The findings further reinforce the need to address suicide prevention through a robust, coordinated, multisector approach that combines health care system efforts with community efforts”, the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention said in a statement about the report.
