The US and Cuba are continuing work on re-establishing direct scheduled commercial flights, a State Department official said Thursday, though it isn’t likely technical and regulatory challenges can be overcome for services to be launched this year.
The new round-trip, non-stop flight will operate every Tuesday starting December 1 in partnership with Cuba Travel Services, a travel provider licensed by the US government to arrange flights to Cuba.
JetBlue airline planning senior vice-president Scott Laurence said: “Even as the world anticipates what future air travel to Cuba will look like, we recognise that many Americans need to travel there today”.
The two companies now operate one of two other JFK-to-Havana charter flights.
While nothing has been finalized, department officials said, both nations have a strong common will to reach a few sort of arrangement for scheduled flights between both countries.
The airline has built valuable experience operating in Cuba since 2011 with its charter program, and has plans for service from multiple cities ready to go.
A few airlines have already been flying to the island for years, albeit with flights organized in the name of charter companies.
