Class of 2016 5-star small forward Wenyen Gabriel will be playing his college basketball for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats.
Gabriel announced his United Kingdom commitment on Twitter after revealing his choice on camera to ESPN’s Recruiting Nation microsite.
Gabriel is a Manchester, New Hampshire, native and started his high school career there at Trinity High School before transferring to Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts.
We discussed last week that Duke’s interest and subsequent commitment from Javin DeLaurier wouldn’t have any impact on the continued pursuit of Harry Giles, but it could be an indication/factor of how things were progressing with the recruitment of Gabriel.
Gabriel, who is now a five-star recruit, is one of the all-time late-bloomers.
Wenyen Gabriel chose the Wildcats and coach John Calipariover Duke, Maryland, Connecticut and Providence. That won me over. His stock and reputation enhanced with each week, to the point where he’s now ranked the No. 16 overall player in the class of 2016 in 247 Sports’ composite echelon. Gabriel is 6 foot-10 and will need to put on a few weight to be able to hang at the next level but that shouldn’t be a problem once he gets on a training program.
On September 27, DeLaurier committed to Duke and it was expected to push Gabriel away to either Maryland or Kentucky. There are still plenty of players to come off the board, many of which Kentucky is recruiting, but for now they appear to be putting together another great recruiting class.
