Protests in Ferguson for anniversary of police shooting

Belmar said the suspect was not a part of the civil rights demonstrations, which drew several hundred protesters to the streets of Ferguson Sunday evening. People were shooting guns. But in a separate report, the Justice Department cited racial bias and profiling in policing as well as a profit-driven municipal court system that often targeted black residents, who make up about two-thirds of Ferguson’s populace.Ferguson’s city manager, police chief and municipal judge resigned within days of that report. Officers in an unmarked vehicle drove toward one of those individuals, identified as Harris.

Some protest groups were critical of police. A startled Anderson continued speaking, with a steady burst of gunfire heard in the background. The officers got out of the vehicle and chased Harris on foot behind a business in the 9200 block of West Florissant.

She said he was shot in the front, back and side, and that the family has been told it was not yet clear if a bullet could be removed from his spine. Harris attempted to fire at the officers again, but was shot. They have been placed on administrative leave. The gunshots that resulted in the police shooting started minutes later.

Several volleys of gunshots rang out as police in riot gear tried to disperse demonstrators blocking traffic and smashing storefront windows along a street that was a flashpoint of last year’s unrest in the St. Louis suburb after Michael Brown, 18, was slain.

“President Obama’s task force broadly, rather than exposing the challenges law enforcement faces, is 100 pages of how police can improve”, he said. A journalist was attacked and robbed in a parking lot. Tyrone Harris, an 18-year-old African-American, was shot by police after allegedly opening gunfire on a group of plainclothes officers.

“We’re ready for what?”

The protesters, locking arms and edging closer to the police cordon, began throwing water bottles and shouting, “We are ready for war!”

St Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said he was angry that a shooting had marred the weekend’s events in Ferguson, which have so far gone off without major incidents or arrests. A 17-year-old was shot in the chest and shoulder, and a 19-year-old was shot in the chest, but their injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

The teens were walking on a sidewalk near where Brown was killed a year ago.

Police are saying the shooting was not related to the Michael Brown activities.

AFP video showed a black man lying facedown on the ground in handcuffs, bleeding profusely.

An investigation by the Justice Department later corroborated some aspects of Wilson’s account, and federal officials decided not to bring a case against him. “He’s bleeding out”, a voice said off-camera.

[Body cameras for cops could be the biggest change to come out of the Ferguson protests].

In the months after Brown’s death, protesters hoped that the officer who shot him, Darren Wilson, would be indicted. Police fired tear gas in response, sparking more tensions. He has since retired from the department and lives in fear and seclusion, he told the media this past week.

A phalanx of helmeted police wearing body armour and carrying shields moved in.

But protesters are expected to return.

Monday’s arrests came after a roughly mile-long march from a St. Louis church to the Eagleton courthouse.
