“It may be good as a result of I am going to play the most effective gamers ever”, stated Pennetta.

Sabine Lisicki secured her place in the second round of the Rogers Cup with a comprehensive victory over Venus Williams.

During the match, some fans cheered on Lisicki but many tried to encourage Williams as she struggled.

Williams, trailing 3-0, had a chance to break back but could not convert as Lisicki held to forge further ahead.

“It’s hard to just, first round, play a player who doesn’t give you any rhythm”, Williams said.

This was Williams’ second match since she lost to her sister Serena during the fourth round at Wimbledon, and she was noticeably shaky.

Only one other singles match was completed Monday, as Italy’s Flavia Pennetta defeated Ottawa’s Gabriel Dabrowski 6-4, 6-1 on center court.

Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., was set to face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in her first-round match on centre court at 7 p.m.
