Straight Outta Compton topped the box office this weekend, debuting at No. 1 with .1 million. (Guardians of the Galaxy and Bourne Ultimatum hold the #1 and #2 August records). But along comes “Straight Outta Compton” and suddenly the box office picture is looking to be all good again.

What’s surprising about Universal’s success is that it achieved so much without a superhero movie, of which there were a few this year.
