Since last month, the military has stepped up operations in Shawal Valley, where the Taliban still operates freely. Khyber has always been known as a stronghold for militants belonging to the Pakistani Taliban and its Lashkar-e-Islam faction.

The incidents came after United States military strikes targeted militants threatening worldwide coalition forces near the border in eastern Afghanistan.

Taliban militant group fighting the government to regain power has claimed of responsibility for downing the chopper, a claim utterly rejected by Khpalwak as groundless.

A spokesman for USA forces in Afghanistan declined to say which troops have been concerned and the character of the menace.

“I’ll generally say coalition forces for both”, Colonel Brian Tribus said.
