Transgender woman beaten, fatally shot in Philadelphia

Officer Tanya Little, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department’s Office of Public Affairs, states that Jenkins was attacked by five to six males, and shot in the back while exiting her vehicle at 13th and Wingohocking streets around 2:30 North Philadelphia. One woman asked not to be identified, but told FOX 29, ” “These guys was out here trying to rob the girls, and she fought back and they shot her”.

News of Jenkins’ death sparked a strong reaction on social media as posters showed their support for her by using the hashtag #SayHerName on Twitter and Facebook.

As investigators worked to make sense of the senseless murder, Jenkins’ family gathered to mourn at the other end of the city.

Nellie Fitzpatrick, from the mayors workplace, tells FOX 29 there have been 21 transgender people murdered…

“She was known to the LGBTQ community as a transgender individual”, the spokeswoman said.

There have been at least 20 transgender women killed in the United States so far this year, according to an August report by Fusion.

She was taken to Einstein Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Advocates have expressed dissatisfaction with the way her case was handled.

“This is evidence that more advocacy is needed”.

A transgender woman was beaten and shot to death, but authorities said it was too early in their investigation to tell whether it might have been a hate crime.
