US Rep. Chaffetz announces bid for House speaker
Representative Kevin McCarthy, certainly the House most pioneer, remnants the favourite for the speaker stance.
A Republican from Utah has officially entered the race to become Speaker of the House.
Outside experts wonder if the change in speaker will really mean much for the ongoing fights between defense supporters and fiscal hawks.
Even the unprecedented development that McCarthy’s ascension will put Californians in the House’s top two party positions is less than it seems for the Golden State.
A constant focus of conservatives’ complaints, Boehner was facing the threat of a floor vote on whether he could stay on as speaker, a formal challenge that hasn’t happened in over 100 years.
In addition to Chaffetz and McCarthy, Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., is also running for speaker. On the issues, Kevin has gotten results where others have failed. The full House is expected to vote later this month. If the GOP is fractured, there would be multiple votes on the floor.
I believe McCarthy is talented enough to do this. “I can bridge that divide between our more centrist members and a few of the more far right-wing members”. “That doesn’t signal change”, Chaffetz, a tea party favorite, said in reference to McCarthy. There are 248 Republicans so the winning candidate may not lose more than 28 Republican members if he is going to be elected without cutting a deal with Nancy Pelosi. It still can’t get to 218.
“I think the optics of it could really be damaging to Hillary Clinton regardless of what comes out of that hearing”, said strategist Ford O’Connell.
The Utah congressman says the Republicans have the majority but they haven’t, so far, been able to lead because of the fractured caucus.
Yet Democrats aren’t exactly getting their hopes up, and with good reason. “There has to be a legal lawful way to go through this process that works, and right now it doesn’t”. I know the kind of man he is and the kind of leader he will be. Because of the volume of reader comments, we can not review individual moderation decisions with readers. I think those 50-plus people find that I’m a fair, even-balanced person.
It’s the biggest issue in his district, Rodriguez said, and there’s broad consensus within the farmworker and agricultural communities that what’s needed is a stabilized workforce and a system to bring people in through programs to supplement domestic labor. In 2011, with a new majority, House Republicans kept that promise and made the ban a reality. Because of that, Bedwell said local leaders must do all they can to assist McCarthy. He could be cutting deals, one on one, with the president and the Senate majority leader. “That’s not what we were elected to do”.
Bridget Johnson is a veteran journalist whose news articles and opinion columns have run in dozens of news outlets across the globe.
“We need a speaker that will understand the legislative branch is coequal to the executive branch”, he said in a recent radio commentary. My concern is that the next speaker will be from the extremist wing of their party and won’t share that respect for the institution of the House or for the President. He slept on a cot in his office when he came to the Hill to convey a message of fiscal responsibility. That’s what I want to do. In this case, we may fix spelling and punctuation.
Herson was hopeful that McCarthy, as speaker, would be willing to work out a deal in Congress to ease sequestration budget caps that restrict federal dollars. The Bill’s momentum died during the summer recess of 2013, when immigration patriots rose up against their congressmen during townhalls and only 30 Republicans would endorse a pathway to citizenship.
But that’s – again, it’s not my personal agenda. Things have gotten worse since then.
CHAFFETZ: Our job in the House – we have 246 members. “The email issue and Benghazi have reinforced the belief she is constantly trying to hide something”, he said. Ousting Hatch was unlikely at best, Chaffetz said. I think she’s lied about the server in her basement. Only a conservative could love Boehner’s record, which included cutting $2.4 trillion from the deficit mostly from the spending side and without tax increases.
CHAFFETZ: Look, I’m going to be myself.
“We need a Speaker who is an effective communicator”, Chaffetz wrote in the email to his colleagues. And that’s a problem.
CHAFFETZ: Your compensation in 2009 was $353,000. These are not things that a not-for-profit needs. Is that the kind of speaker you would be? The fact that he won the election by supporting patriotic immigration reform makes him flawless to be the next leader. “And we don’t oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal”.
So, it’s a lesson learned.
We follow the same standards for taste as the daily newspaper. Nor is it clear that the House GOP’s hard-line faction will embrace him, especially because of an episode where he briefly revoked a subcommittee chairman’s gavel to try to enforce obedience to leadership.
Democrats say they are cautiously optimistic that Chaffetz will be a better chairman than Issa.
WALLACE: And do you still have confidence in Director Clancy? The Secret Service later leaked that Chaffetz had applied for a job with the agency several years ago and had been rejected. They’ve had a series of mishaps and they’re entrusted with guns near the president.
