Memorials Continue For Fallen Dallas Police Officers

The first funerals have been held in the wake of a deadly shooting in downtown Dallas last week. After the service a procession will take Ahrens to the Garden of Honor at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, where he will be laid to rest.

Sam Eichenwald for NewsweekFollowing the memorial service for the fallen officers, a group of city residents gathered beneath the Dallas flag near the fountain outside of City Hall to display “Love one another” in bright pink lettering.

A civil funeral is being held today for Dallas Police Sgt. Michael Smith.

As an officer, “Lorne was passionate about police-work” and “had the biggest heart and best intentions”, he said.

His wife approached the podium with her police partner at her side, “just in case I can’t make it through and need backup”, she said.

Boston police and Massachusetts State Police are not formally sending representatives to Dallas, but officials at both agencies said they expected dozens of officers and troopers to travel on their own time and at their own expense to attend the services.

“When the bullets started flying, the men and women of the Dallas police, they did not flinch and they did not react recklessly”, he said, praising the officers.

Smith had won the Dallas Police Association’s “Cop’s Cop” award.

At the service for DART officer Brent Thompson, we heard about another officer who chose a life of serving others.
