When asked about their connection to Planned Parenthood, the pair said they’re simply “Americans and human beings” who “believe in people making their own reproductive choices”.

Dan Handler, better known as A Series of Unfortunate Events author Lemony Snicket, pledged along with his wife Tuesday to donate a million dollars to Planned Parenthood, in the midst of an ongoing congressional investigation into the group.

Planned Parenthood, which survived a lashing on the Hill today, thanked the Handlers.

In his tweet he noted that he and his wife Lisa Brown had been “very fortunate” and the “fortune should be shared with noble causes”.

Brown elaborated on the couple’s decision in a statement to BuzzFeed.

Brown told BuzzFeed that she and Handler have donated to Planned Parenthood for years, calling it a “great organization that has provided top-quality health care for countless women and families in our lives”. The group says the videos show Planned Parenthood officials talking about selling fetal tissue for profit to researchers.

Planned Parenthood has been the subject of intense controversy and debate recently, with Republicans in Congress fighting to defund the organization.

The president of the association said that recent accusations are “offensive and categorically untrue”.

In response, Planned Parenthood supporters have waged a social media campaign, #standwithPP, to demonstrate widespread support for the health services the organization provides to women.
