Two New York City police officers were shot and injured Saturday morning when gunfire erupted after a man pointed a revolver at officers and fled in a auto before ramming a responding police vehicle, Police Commissioner William Bratton said. The incident began when two housing police officers responded to shots fired at Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.

“I wouldn’t say they’re O.K., but they are alive thankfully”, another police source said about the injured officers. The bullet did not penetrate his vest, but he suffered blunt-force trauma.

After Funes was apprehended, a.357-caliber revolver was found in the front seat of his vehicle with five spent shell casings, police said.

All of the shots fired during the Brooklyn shootout were captured on the NYPD’s ShotSpotter, a high-tech gunshot detection system, Bratton added.

Police were investigating on Sunday whether any of the bullets that struck two officers during a shooting over the weekend came from friendly fire, a law enforcement official said.

De Blasio said that he and Bratton had the chance to visit with the officers, who were “alert” and “talkative” after the shooting. “And these officers pursued their work last night with vigor, with focus, these are very dedicated officers who were out there protecting us”.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department said investigators have notified the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force about the incident but are unaware of any ties Funes may have to terrorism.

Officials say the suspect, Jamal Funes, was shot multiple times.
